The Skinny On Our Photoshoot
GOOD LAWD! I never realized how many phrases and words from the 60s and 70s fill up my vocabulary today. I mean, “Jeepers Creepers”? Duh! “Catch ya on the flip side"“? Shoot, I say that at least once a week. And, I definitely tell Waylin to “Gimme some skin.” ✌ Yeah, baby, yeah!
We had Waylin’s photoshoot in September on my in-laws’ property. A lot of Way’s life is spent over at her grandparents house, so I thought it was the perfect place to shoot her two year old photos! I just love it out there! First of all, MIL’s house has this thing I call “turkey effect.” Most people know that as a “medical condition” when you get sleepy on Thanksgiving …Okay, it’s not teeechnically medical, but it really should be! Anyways, MIL’s house makes me sooo lazy. Even just laying around on her carpet is pure relaxation. Second of all, their property is gorgeous. And third of all, they have chickens! 🐔
I have a passion for designing photoshoots. I love to pick an interesting theme or idea and build around that. I can’t pick a new ceiling fan for my house without taking 6+ months, but damnit! I can buy props for a photoshoot in minutes! #amazonmom
I decided to breakup the photoshoot into three separate themes:
Chickens, duh! She loves chickens.
Pumpkin Pie in a Pumpkin Patch (we couldn’t waste an opportunity to photograph our own pumpkin patch!)
a 70s retro vibe…complete with disco balls, vinyls, and bell bottoms!
I thought it was important for me to write a blog post about this, because no one will believe the story I am going to tell you about my morning. * grabs popcorn for you *
I started loading up my tiny @$$ Toyota the night before with all of our props, outfit changes, stroller, etc. I wanted to have the least amount of things to do in the morning, so I could actually attempt to put more than just tinted moisturizer on my face. 😘 It was going to be a tight fit, but I thought I could make it work.
For the 70s shoot, I planned on bringing this cool chair that I bought off of an old friend for $20. It has this timeless look to it. I HAD TO HAVE THE CHAIR FOR THE SHOOT! It was kind of my inspiration for the whole thing…ya, a chair! In the morning, I tried to load it up, but it wasn’t fitting. I tried every geometrical tetris move possible. The only way I could get the chair in was to have it hang out the window as I drove…and a good 40% of it got a lot of “breeze” that day.
I put quotes around “breeze” because…there was no such thing! In fact, I think the day of our photoshoot was a record setting day for September in Illinois. 😱 In addition to the chair hanging out the window, I also had 4 huge pumpkins in the backseat of my car. These pumpkins are from my in-laws’ patch. I decided to bring them BACK over to their house for the photoshoot because they were big and the Crowley’s already started picking a bunch of pumpkins for their business.
So, you’ve got the scene in your head, right?
one chair hanging out the window like a dog enjoying a car ride
4 large pumpkins (and a couple gourds) in the backseat
Outfits hanging from the window
Boxes of supplies, props, tape, and things I didn’t even use lol
Jogging stroller crammed in the trunk
My driver’s seat pushed all the way up to the steering wheel to REALLY look like a clown car
It was almost time to head over to set everything up. One last prop was needed before we hit the road: the llama pumpkin pie that I made for Waylin to smash. I grabbed it from the fridge and squeezed into the driver’s seat. There was no safe spot for the pumpkin pie, so it had to be held like a baby. 🤣
I’m driving through the country like usual. Surely, no one would bat an eye at my hooptie. Oh, I was right. No ONE bat an eye, but a big ASS Doberman outta nowhere sure did smell that pie!
This dog was chasing my car as I was driving down the road, and then it cut in front of the car! I had to slam on the breaks. The pumpkins go flying all over the place. Some hit the back of my seat and a gourd fell in Waylin’s lap. The pie almost slipped my hands! Every time I would try to drive off, the dog would run along side and then cut in front of me! I seriously contemplated on dipping my finger into the pie and throwing some on the side of the road and then gassing it. 🏁
Fortunately, I made it without accidentally killing any dogs or ruining any pie. ✔
If you don’t believe me, Waylin is my witness! 👀
Even she thought our morning started out a little weird! 🤣
P.S. I’ll share some of my favorite pictures from the shoot in the next post!
