Adventure is a Choice
I laugh as I start writing about my lactose allergy after titled this post, “Adventure is a Choice” 💩
I feel like everyone has referenced karma before. Somebody passed you obnoxiously on the highway during a snowstorm and ends up in the ditch a mile later? Karma. Someone steals from a store only to come home to their apartment ransacked? Karma. You have a baby and develop a lactose allergy? K A R M A!
Yep, the biggest cheese lover south of I-80 now has trouble with lactose. And trust me when I say…it’s just like the movies. 💩 🚽 💩 Why ME!? The best part, Waylin doesn’t suffer from it period. I feed her beautiful sprinkles of cheese with some of her meals and a small part of my heart dies. 💀
One of the hardest parts about having a lactose allergy is that I can’t have ice cream without being within .45 seconds of a toilet. TMI…but FYI. 😂 When Ben and I remet, we spent a lot of our dates going to get ice cream either hopping on the bike to head to the Dairy Barn in Sidney, a quick trip to Marble Slab, or even the long haul to Mattoon to have ice cream with eye balls on them! <- The Original Burger King is located there and they sell ice cream cones with ice balls. The first time we went there, we had no idea what they were talking about…”You want to know if I want…EYE BALLS on my ice cream?” 👀
Both Ben and myself will tell you that each other is the culprit for starting our love of ice cream. We both claim that neither of us liked ice cream until the other “dragged “ us to an ice cream parlor. I live to tell you that I DID NOT have cravings for ice cream until Ben kept eating it! It’s was him. He’s the “bad influence!” 🍦
I didn’t know whether or not I should start this sentence off with “Funny story” or not. 🤣 One hot day earlier this summer, I asked Ben to stop at Dairy Queen which is about 15 minutes away from our house, in fact, it’s even on the main drag that you take to get to our house. Being the good husband that he is, he obliged. I got a mini Sundae Blizzard. I ate it within the first 3 miles of the trek back to our house. Within 5 miles, my intestines were screaming “ALERT! ⚠ ALERT! ⚠”
…I’ve never been so close in MY LIFE to shitting my pants in front of someone…ya know, just the love of my F R E A K I N G life! 🤣 In between the screaming at him to drive faster and yelling “OMG! OMG!”, I made it. 🚽 I couldn’t believe my stomach was that upset THAT FAST. So, after a near-divorce (kidding) experience, I have told myself that ice cream cannot be a part in my life anymore. 😞
Ben frequently tells me how much he misses pre-lactose allergy Stevie, because he doesn’t get to eat ice cream as often. See! I told you he’s the influencer on the ice cream runs!
Now he has Waylin to share ice cream with! Those lucky monkeys…🍀
When I see the picture above it just makes me wanna sing that classic Pearl Jam song…
🎵 Oh where, oh where, did my baaaaaaaby gooooo…🎵
Those aren’t the exact lyrics to “Last Kiss”, but that’s how I sing it. I even sing it that way on the phone to Ben when he’s been gone all day working on something. 🤣
She looks so grown up here! I know a lot of growth happens between newborn to 12 months, but I think I’ve noticed the most change from 1-2. Every few weeks I look at her and I’m like, “Oh where, oh where, did my baaaaaaby gooooo…” It seems like every few weeks she’s looking closer to getting her driver’s license and I’m just over here nervously biting off all of my nails. 😁
What makes an adventure an adventure? One of the things I think this blog has shown me as it has grown is that I know the answer to this question. Part of the beauty of adventure is that everyone has a different idea of what that means. Sure, skydiving is adventurous. Did it. Loved it. But, adventure doesn’t always have to involve something dangerous or exciting.
For us, it’s the little things.
We pulled over at an old iron truss bridge out in the country. It wasn’t planned. In fact, we were headed home to relax after a busy day. We thought Waylin might think it was cool. And it was definitely cool and maybe slightly dangerous! 😎
Again, “Oh where, oh where did my baaaaaaby goooooo?” 😂
Adventure can be found in our everyday lives. In the little things. If you choose to see it.
That is why adventure is a choice. So, pull the car over. Take a walk and go explore.
